Weather radar for Norway (with lightning)

The map shows where precipitation (rain, sleet, snow etc) falls, the colour giving an indication of the amount.

When lightning activities occur, each lightning will appear on the map.

By emitting radar waves the radar registers how precipitation moves . It will then receive echoes if the waves hit precipitation particles. The animation shows precipitation during the last hours, the last picture in the sequence being the most recent. The time at which it was taken is given (in local time) in the upper right corner.

Under certain conditions the radar waves are deflected and hit the ground instead, giving false echoes. False echoes can be recognised by being fairly motionless.

Lightning is displayed on the map using the two symbols in the lower right corner of the picture. The map shows a shaded area where only lightning inside the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish economic zone are plotted.

The symbols indicate if lightning has struck the ground, or if it is kept inside the clouds. Lightning within the last 11 minutes before the radar's observation point are displayed in black. Lightning after the radar's observation point are displayed in blue, and are overlaid over the black symbols. The red number indicates the total number of lightning events for the whole period.
